{Celebrate} Homemade For The Holidays | Recycled Paper Ornaments
December 6, 2011 in All Posts, Celebrate, Play, Toddler Activities
We get so many holiday catalogs this time of year and I have so many back issues of every fashion magazine known to woman, we decided that turning the piles of paper sitting in our recycling bin into ornaments would be the perfect Sunday afternoon mother-daughter activity. And it was!
We were inspired by Aleacia at Dilly Dali Art, who was featured as the Day Number 3 blogger on the Creative Christmas Countdown and made to-die-for adorable holiday cards decorated with paper scrap ornaments!
Here’s how we made our recycled paper ornaments:
Materials
- Old magazines or catalogs
- Copy paper, construction paper, or a brown grocery bag from your recycling bin
- Scissors
- Glue
- Hole punch
- Ribbon, string or pipe cleaners
- Optional: Laminator or contact paper
Step 1
Have your toddler cut out strips from your old magazine collection or the bright pages of holiday catalogs filling up your mailbox.
Step 2
Let her glue the strips to a piece of paper.
Step 3
After the strips have dried, cut out a circle shape to make the ornament. You can also laminate your ornament like we did so it lasts for years to come.
Step 4
Punch a hole at the top and thread a piece of ribbon through to form a hanging loop. We used pipe cleaners to make a festive hanger in the shape of a bow.

Thanks
I think they’re my favorite!
Great ornament craft perfect for children of all ages!
Thanks, Rebekah! I really loved participating in this one myself - it’s nice when it’s not just you setting out something for the little ones to do, but you get to join in and create something, too!
I love these. Cutting up the conglomeration into a circle at the end really makes these stunning. Before it looked a lot like baby art and now it looks like a work of art!
You’re so right
Nicely put (and thanks for the sweet compliment!).
Very pretty!
Aww, thanks
These are really pretty! I think my kids would love to do this!
And I bet you will, too! Well, I definitely did. I wanted to do more, but then Jane was up for a new activity, so I had to stop. Kinda funny
These look gorgeous! The weaving idea is so beautiful. I like that it can be made as simple or elaborate as per age, time and taste! Great idea…
Definitely! Thanks for checking it out and your sweet comment, Rashmie
These are SO neat! Such a great idea to have her decorate it and then cut it out! I am definitely doing this. We have TONS of holiday mags!
I had so much fun with it that it couldn’t just be a “kids craft.” Sometimes mommy needs a little art therapy herself
Thanks for stopping by!
These turned out beautifully! I like how you weaved yours, really makes a nice looking pattern with the magazine strips. Thanks for the shout-out!
Thanks, Aleacia! I decided on the weaving after already starting in on the project, but I’m sure if you started it from the beginning it would look even cooler (with better contrast). Thanks for the awesome inspiration
