{Play} Fine Motor Skills & Sensory Play With Rainbow Rice
April 23, 2012 in All Posts, Fun With Food!, Play, Toddler Activities
We’ve really been getting mileage out of our first batch of Rainbow Rice, which we used to make Magic Rainbow Rice Letters. The opportunities for play and learning are endless with this material, which makes it one of our favorites, even though it’s a hassle in terms of clean up.
Here are some of the things we’ve been doing lately with our Rainbow Rice:
What have you done with yours? We’ve love to hear your ideas!

Hello just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of
the pictures aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but
I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different web browsers and both show the same results.
I was wondering would the rice be recommended for children age 1? I am sure they would try to eat it though?
It depends on the child. For my son, there would have been no way we did this at 12 months because I wouldn’t be able to keep any of it out of his mouth. My daughter, on the other hand, wasn’t such a mouth-y baby and would understand she couldn’t eat it. If you think your child is ready and you’re able to supervise him/her well during the activity, then go for it! Otherwise, no harm in waiting. (Btw, the same went for my son and any dry bean activities … we just had to wait until he was older). Thanks for stopping by and I hope you get to enjoy the activity at some point now or later
[…] to objects and space. (Find a more technical definition here). It doesn’t have to be playing with a sensory bin full of rice grains (although that’s super fun), but going for a nature walk also can be a rich sensory […]
Hi there! I found this post via Pinterest and just featured it on my brand new blog, here: http://missautumnk.blogspot.com/2012/06/83-sensory-bin-ideas.html

[…] our house we have a lot of fun with sensory activities, like playing and learning with rainbow rice, baking, and kneading playdough. Most of the time, we are […]
I can’t believe that I have yet to dye rice or pasta. I know my kids would love it. You make it look so fun! Thanks for the inspiration. And for sharing at the Kids Co-Op this week.
We haven’t dyed pasta yet … just painted it, which was super fun. Although, the color comes off if you paint versus dye it.
This is so pretty! I have never tried to dye rice!
You definitely should - it’s so much fun! We still haven’t dyed pasta, only painted it. That’s next for us
I love your rainbow rice and I agree rice play is worth the clean up time. I love sitting down and playing with it too.
So fun for us parents, too! I dread the cleanup, but just keep my mouth shut when they’re flinging it around
Thanks, Ali! So many of the just-for-kids activities are so great for us grownups, too, aren’t they? Guess it’s like informal art therapy
We have to make rainbow rice now- I used it as filler in vases and can’t cook it so I’m saving it for something like this! I’m so behind on reading blogs- I’ll catch up!
That’s so funny - that was my first reaction before we played with it: it’d be perfect to fill little candleholders and vases with as decoration in the bathroom. Especially the vibrant blue - very beachy. I’m so behind as well
